Unfriendly Fire
Everyone in our community should know about Na-
thaniel Frank and his book Unfriendly Fire. He’s recently
appeared on Rachel Maddow, The Daily Show, countless
newspapers and at our own LGBT Center. His book is
pretty much the definitive compendium of all that’s
known about gays serving in the military both here
and abroad, and in fact there’s a campaign to send his
book to every member of congress in the run-up to the
upcoming debate on abolishing the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy. There are some
surprising revelations, including how the politicians and the brass who created
the policy ignored the extensive research available and essentially “made stuff
up” because they didn’t want to deal with the issue. Amazingly, Nathaniel has
gotten these same men to admit and regret that they did exactly that. The book
also focuses on how the policy has actually harmed our effectiveness, especially
with the discharge of so many Arabic translators. He loves to tell the story of how
an intercepted message went untranslated on the day before 9/11 that said,
“Tomorrow is the day.”
No Strings
Mention Gerri Hill and most women will buy her books
sight unseen. Her new novel No Strings takes place in
sleepy Lake City located somewhere in the beautiful
and serene Colorado mountains. It’s no surprise that the
story involves a female sheriff and a female forest ranger,
and right there moseys along nice and easy. And in kind,
these two women strike up a bargain to get together on
a no-strings-attached basis, which seemed perfectly
reasonable at the time. But winter sets in and they spend
more and more time together in close quarters, keeping
warm and all that, and things just get better and better and their bargain ends
up being something that just doesn’t fit the situation anymore, not to mention
that the sheriff is scheduled to return back to her previous job as a police chief
in the big city. Gerri Hill offers another superbly written character-driven (and
sometimes “sizzling”) story that is sure to delight both old and new fans of her
