its freight schedules so the Amtrak dis- play train could occupy the main line Friday night and most of Saturday. VRS provided hourly train rides from White River Junction north to Nor- wich, with ex-Rutland Alco RS1 No. 405 on the north end and GP40-2LW No. 311 (dressed in VRS’s 50th an- niversary paint scheme) on the south end. Gloomy skies were the norm for Saturday, but attendance was high and

the first few hourly trains ran with al- most-capacity crowds on board. A soak- ing rain later in the day did dampen the enthusiasm a bit, however. New England Central was represent- ed with two display locomotives, in- cluding GP40-2LW No. 3015 in parent GWI’s corporate colors and GP38 No. 3845 in NECR’s traditional blue and gold.

Amtrak’s display train had matching heritage units on each end,

with P42 No. 822 on the south end and No. 145 on the north end; both are dressed in Amtrak’s “Heritage III” tri- stripe scheme. Amtrak reported the number of visitors through the display train was one of the largest of any of the small-town stops it had made. The railroad that stole the show, however, was Pan Am Railways. While Saturday was gloomy, both Friday and Sunday were sunny and those were the days PAR’s office car train was ferried from East Deerfield, Mass., to White River Junction and back. At about 10:30 on Friday morning a large crowd began to assemble on the famous rail- fan bridge over the west end of East Deerfield yard, with groups coming south from White River Junction and
