costing about $130 million; Washington, D.C., will join the streetcar club with a 2.4- mile, $134 million H Street streetcar. This is just the beginning of streetcar service in the several cities mentioned. The reason for the investment in streetcars is to stimulate de- velopment and urban growth. Just the an- nouncement of the Atlanta streetcar has stimulated over $700 million of new devel- opment along the planned route. Opposition to streetcars has developed its own cottage industry. Strong opponents are mostly mad about spending money. Thanks to David Har- ris, and Jack Cavanaugh for the information.

On May 2, 2014, an F Train express derailed in Queens, putting six of the eight cars on the ground and seriously injuring four peo- ple; 15 others who were injured were treated at the scene. The accident occurred at 10:40 a.m. about 1200 feet south of the 65th Street Station in Woodside. Investigation shortly after the accident

reveals that a broken rail caused the acci- dent. The rail was manufactured in the U.S. in November 2013 and installed in March 2014. The transit authority tracked down the other rails in the batch and where they were located in the system. The New York subway system has an excellent record on derailments, which are very rare for such a large and busy system. Thanks to Doug Bar- ron for the information.

Kansas City Streetcar Breaks Ground

Streetcar service is not expected to begin in Kansas City, Mo., until 2015, but some ma-

jor items are being crossed of the to-do list. Ground was broken on May 22, 2014, and work began on welding rail in preparation for track laying and a number of extensions are already being considered. The color scheme for the equipment is under consider- ation; it appears that black, silver, and white will be the selection, similar to the col- or of the PCC cars used in the past. Other schemes of color may be used for the logos and other identifying marks. A bright blue color has already been selected for the seats inside the cars. Many thanks to James E. Asplund for the happy news.

Congratulations to Richard Brazda

Old friend, former student, and colleague, Richard Brazda began a career in transit management with the Chicago Transit Au- thority in 1970. He also worked with PACE in the Chicago area. From 2003-’11 he was Director of Public Transit in Danville, Ill. Recently, the Danville City Council Public Works Committee is considering naming the soon-to-be built Danville Mass Transit Transfer Center the Richard Brazda Bus Terminal. In the past Dick was deeply involved in

writing Mass Transit Management: A Hand- book for Small Cities, which was produced by the Institute for Urban Transportation at Indiana University. While working in the Chicago area he was very involved in plan- ning the connections between rail and bus service in Chicago and its suburbs. My son Paul and I enjoyed several steam-powered trips with Dick on the Southern Railway in southern Indiana. Congratulations!
