ABOVE LEFT: Silver Dollar City was the scene of the only steam during the convention. No. 13, an 0-4-0T built by Orenstein & Koppel of Germany in 1934, pauses under the park’s wooden roller coaster on June 11. ABOVE RIGHT: The Fort Smith Trolley Museum was part of two convention events. On Thursday, June 12, passengers on the run from Springdale to Fort Smith enjoy a brief chance to ride the museum’s Birney car. An ex- tended visit by bus would be made the following day. BELOW: A&M 44 leads the southbound mixed train through the curve at Schaberg (near Chester, Mo.) This was one of the few places the sun didn’t cooperate, as the first runby got dinked by a cloud. The solution? Do it again, this time with sun. BOTTOM: The Amtrak display train stretches around the curve approaching Seligman, Mo., on June 16. The train was in Springdale for much of the convention, and departed town behind A&M Alcos heading back to the BNSF connection at Monett, Mo.

successful convention, and this one was certainly successful. Convention chair- man Bart Jennings (who had been re- sponsible for the highly efficient rail operations at both the Iowa convention in 2012 and the Alaska convention in 2013) once again kept things running on time. Bart has assembled a team of car hosts and safety personnel who have worked together on trips, and the cohesion of the team certainly showed. From the A&M, passenger trains oper- ations manager Brenda Rouse was charged with working with Bart and the train crew to keep things moving smoothly. Brenda worked a lot of long hours to make sure everything from the railroad side was as perfect as can be. Amtrak provided its display train (the former 40th anniversary train) which was in Springdale for much of the con- vention. The North Arkansas Chapter NRHS provided entertainment each evening with slide shows and seminars. Noted photographer J.P. Bell also had a photo display in the convention hotel lobby throughout the event. The 2014 convention is in the books.

It operated safely and on time, and was a lot of fun. How can you argue with mountain scenery and Alcos? It was a winning combination.

Mark your calendars for June 14-20,

2015, when the NRHS National Con- vention moves to Rutland, Vermont. Please visit www.nrhs.com for details.
