LEFT: One of the things I enjoyed when train traffic was sparse and the light was interesting was to look for repeating lines. Once such op- portunity was empty hoppers located in Union Pacific’s yard in Grand Junction, Colo. I really like the glint from the hoppers and the curving of the track along with some nice cloud for- mations.

BELOW: A great subject for night photography was Denver’s Union Station at Christmas time as it was always adorned in festive lighting. While the lighting was nice bonus, throw in the classic neon signs atop the station and Rio Grande Ski Train cars on the depot tracks and you really had a good reason to stay up late.

LEFT: Back when Union Pacific had the only heritage units around, the railroad decided to put all the units on display in Salt Lake City, Utah. Those lucky enough to get tickets to the June 2007 event were able to photograph the new units in all their glory. Interestingly, I was able to capture them all in one shot the night before while they sat in a big, open field.
