Quartz Mountain Flyer returns to FarmRail

King Mountain provides a dramatic back- drop for the Quartz Mountain Flyer as it passes the grain elevator in Lugert, Okla. These excursion trains are operated in cooperation with the Quartz Mountain Nature Park and FarmRail, over the rail- road’s former Santa Fe line between Clin- ton and Altus, Okla. The train ride includes detailed narration by the park naturalist, providing cultural and natural history of the area. This year marks the re- turn of the popular excursions after track work forced a service suspension in 2012.

White River Junction hosts Glory Days Railroad Festival

The 22nd Annual Glory Days Railroad Festival in White River Junction, Vt., drew a wide variety of exhibits from lo- cal railroads on September 14. High- lights from this year’s popular family event, which focused on the railroads serving WRJ, included the Amtrak Ex- hibit Train, Pan Am Railways’ execu- tive train and two heritage units paint- ed in tribute to the Boston & Maine and Maine Central railroads, Vermont Rail System’s Green Mountain Flyer, and a GP40-2LW

in fresh Genesee &

Wyoming paint provided by New Eng- land Central. A Lego model of the town’s classic depot was on display, and a night photo session was held the evening before

the festival. Despite gloomy

skies, crowds were strong with the first three of five hourly trains on VRS’s Washington County Railroad sold out or nearly so; Amtrak reported one of its best small-town attendance marks for the Exhibit Train. Kevin Burkholder arranged for the visiting equipment.

A four-train lineup occurred at White River Junction, Vt., on September 14, 2014, during the 22nd Annual Glory Days Festival. Amtrak’s Vermonter passed between New England Central GP40-2LW No. 3015 and the Amtrak Exhibit Train with Phase III P40DC No. 822 leading; the Pan Am business train was also there. Vermont Rail System’s 50th Anniver- sary unit, GP40-2LW No. 311, led hourly trips on the Washington County Railroad; Green Mountain RS1 No. 405 was on the opposite end. STEVE BARRY PHOTOS
