Bellows Falls Tunnel

In September I made the trip to White River Junc- tion, Vt., for the an- nual Glory Days Festival (see RAIL- NEWS for photos; dig- ital readers can see bonus coverage of the event beginning on page 58) and on the way up and back I made a stop in a town I have been to numerous times — Bellows Falls, Vt. My first visit to Bel- lows Falls was in 1965 when my Dad took me to Steam- town U.S.A. and we rode the cab of Rahway Valley 2-8-0 No. 15 with F. Nelson Blount himself as engineer. I went to the last few fall spectaculars at Steamtown in the early 1980s, and have been back a few more times since. On this trip my brother Bruce and I paused in town on the evening of Thursday, September 11, and caught Pan Am Railways train BFED (Bellows Falls-East Deerfield) heading south. But the real highlight was a few days later when Pan Am’s business train

returned to East Deerfield from White Riv- er Junction; Pan Am had taken its two F- units north along with two heritage-paint- ed Geeps, one for Maine Central and the other for Boston & Maine. Due to a variety of circumstances at WRJ, the B&M Geep wound up leading the southbound trip on Sunday, September 14. The shot of the trip was the B&M locomotive leading a train out of the former B&M tunnel. You can see the result in FINAL FRAME. —S.B.
