field settings during the brief time the train was in the station. The thing I remember most about
that night was most of the shots were fodder for the trash bin. However, one or two were worthy of saving and ulti- mately would be all the encouragement I needed to continue my new pursuit. With my first night shoot accomplished I began searching for other worthy tar- gets. I soon realized that a wealth of railroad subjects lend themselves to night photography. From the obvious like stations and signals to the unusual
like fireworks, stars, and silhouettes, I have discovered photography after dark to be an important part of my cre- ative work. I continue to experiment with my technique using trial and error and good notes. Now when I head out for some time track side I never leave home without my night gear, especially when traveling to a new location, as I never know what might present itself. If you are looking for new challenges, night time photography might be just what you need.
BELOW: On the first day of January in 2007 the Union Pacific ran a rotary snow plow to clear the former Kansas Pacific line in eastern Colorado and western Kansas. I made the treacherous drive to Sharon Springs in hopes of catching my first rotary in action. After clearing out the yard at Sharon Springs, the plow crew headed on down the line. As a result, I captured this sunset scene of the working rotary plow at Wallace, Kansas.
