simpler if we are dealing with all digital files. Digital photos should be in TIF format (or uncompressed JPEG) and a reference print of each image must accompany any CD—we will not open CD’s just to see what’s on them. We cannot accept CD’s where you need special software to open them (such as Kodak EasyShare). Reference prints must

be at least 3″×5″ (you can fit four onto a page) and refer to the image number as it appears on the CD (if the reference name doesn’t match the file name, the photo will be disqualified — once again, if we don’t know what it is it can’t win). Reference prints do not need to be printed on photo- graphic paper — plain white paper will do. Make sure your name is on all pieces of pa- per you enclose. If you are sending JPEG’s or TIF’s from a digital camera, make sure they are the largest size your camera can pro- duce and make sure they are completely un- compressed. Digital photos can be adjusted for exposure and cropped, but otherwise should be unaltered. Before submitting digital images or

scans, go into your photo editing software and check the physical dimensions of the photo. If your photo is less than 3000 pixels along the longest dimension, we can’t use it. A 3000-pixel photo will only print ten inches across at full resolution, and that will put us right on the outside limit of what’s accept- able for a centerspread. Bigger is better. Securely package everything so it can sur-

vive a trip through the U.S. Postal Service. All slide entries should contain return postage and packaging. And, finally, do not send Center Spread entries with any other correspondence such as news photos or fea- ture material, as we do not open the contest packages until after the deadline. If you use a next day carrier such as

FedEx and want your material returned the same way, please send a completed and paid-for return air bill. Please note new addresses, and send all entries to RAILFAN & RAILROAD, P.O. Box 554, Andover, NJ 07821; FedEx/UPS packages can go to

Railfan & Railroad, 5 Lenape Road #554, Andover, NJ 07821. Prominently mark Center Spread Contest on the envelope. The deadline is November 10, 2014.

CD’s will be disposed of unless return packaging is included. Good luck! —S.B.

And For You Vertical Shooters . . .

We run a FINAL FRAME on the last editorial page of the magazine each month. It’s a great place for vertical shots to be displayed, as it lacks the artistic annoyances you find on the cover, such as the banner and UPC code. Since FINAL FRAME submissions some- times have to wait awhile before we use them, we only accept digital originals or scans of slides so we don’t have to hang onto original slides for eventual use. We accept FINAL FRAME submissions throughout the year. Send them to my attention. —S.B.

Summerail at CUT

One of the finest rail photography events each year is Summerail at CUT, held in Cincinnati Union Terminal. This year’s event was on August 9, but tradition always has the “unofficial” kick-off happening the evening before when a large crowd gathers at Camp Washington Chili for some of Cincinnati’s best. Friday evening saw stan- dard slide show “talkies” in the CUT the- atre, with Mike and Mark Nelson’s “Balti- more & Ohio and Western Maryland in the Early 1970s,” Mike McBride’s “Steam’s Fi- nal Hour: Northwest Steel & Wire,” and Bob Totden with “Erie Lackawanna Around Cleveland.” Scott Lothes, executive director of the Center For Railroad Photography & Art, also presented a show from the CRPA archives, “John Bjorklund’s Pacific North- west.” It was an enjoyable evening of classic railroading. The official show, made up of multi-media presentations, was on Saturday with Sayre Kos kicking things off with “Apocalypse (Al- most) Now,” a look at railroading in 2012 (the year that was supposed to mark the end of the world, according to some).
