BELOW: While I was waiting for the group night photography session to get started I wandered around the roundhouse and ran across this old caboose stove. The stove was in use and imagine my surprise when I notice the “D&RGW” initials of the Rio Grande (my favorite railroad) engraved on the door.

TOP: Sometimes planned events have night photography included as part of the price of admission. One such occasion was a weekend I spent in February 2009 on the Nevada Northern in Ely, Nev. I didn’t have much experience with night group events, but this one was well organized and the sponsors had professional photographers on hand to help those that needed it. The sights, sounds, and smells inside of a working steam round- house make for an awesome night photography experience.

ABOVE: Diesels of all shapes and sizes call the roundhouse at Ely, Ne- vada, home. An Alco road switcher shares space with a bulldozer and a small General Electric 25-ton switcher in this smoky after-dark scene on the Nevada Northern.
