wandered to Montana, Minnesota, and Saskatchewan showing some of railroad- ing’s great survivor stories. Jeff Mast was up next with “Landmarks
of the Pennsylvania Railroad,” focusing on Norfolk Southern’s ex-PRR main line west of Harrisburg in the Keystone State. Some of the best railroading in Pennsylvania can be found on the West Slope of the Allegheny Mountains. through the lens of Bryan Bechtold. Plenty of trains can be found near the Denver Stockyards, and Bryan used an interesting soundtrack to set the stage (I had forgotten Dwight Yoakam covered Eddy Arnold’s “Cattle Call.”) Mike Raia presented a tribute to his fa-
ther with “The Soo Line: Through the Lens of Bill Raia.” The elder Raia worked for Soo Line for 45 years, and this program pre- sented a selection of his material from the 1970s and early 1980s, when the Soo ac- quired part of the Milwaukee Road. Change is constant, and it’s good to see
young photographers interested in rail his- tory. Chase Gunnoe, who is just entering college, took us to his native Mountain State for “Victims To Progress: The C&O in West Virginia.” While there were plenty of the Chesapeake & Ohio’s classic cantilever sig- nals shown, other vanishing aspects of Chessie’s Road were also covered.

The evening break included the tradition-
al R&R Skyline Chili dinner party across the Ohio River in Covington, Ky. This year’s dinner included a slight twist due to R&R being in mid-transition from Carstens to White River Productions, but we’ll get it back to normal in 2015. Back into the theatre for the post-dinner
shows we go, and how can you go wrong with Joe McMillan and the Santa Fe? Joe’s “Route of the Chiefs” took us lineside and be- hind the scenes to see the trains and the peo- ple that made the Santa Fe click. Two-time Center Spread Contest winner
Eric Williams is nothing short of being a master of photography at sunset and night, and his “Sundown to Sunup” was simply stunning. Some shows are inspirational, and this one certainly was — now I can’t wait to get back into New York City and shoot the subways and trains, hoping to cap- ture something even halfway as good as what Eric presented. It was back to (mostly) classic railroading
for Mike Schafer’s “50 Years of Railfanning.” The Passenger Train Journal editor is one of the foremost documentarians of both pre- and post-Amtrak trains, and this show was quite the cross-section of U.S. passenger railroading. All good things must end, and Summerail
came to a close with emcee Ron Flanary’s “Souvenirs.” Ron showed images of the rail- road stuff he has collected through the years, as well as some of the photos he’s tak- en through the years. It was a great finale to a great event. Thanks to show organizer Dave Oroszi, Bill Haines and the rest of the Summerail staff for
