Lang. "Now the industry is all HTML5, but back then we had to convince our backers that this was the right rationale to follow, as HTML5 had only a modest foot- print at the time. Two years ago the market got a little bit bigger, whereas now the sun is setting on Flash and HTML5 is firmly the front-runner technology for this industry. Some operators have even taken the step to stop licensing content that isn't HTML5. Operators don't want to limit themselves to desktop only content, which is only possible with HTML5."


The next big opportunity, according to Odobo, is the emphasis change that will see HTML5 shift from pre- dominately the go-to platform for mobile/tablet games provision, to the technology that drives all desktop play too. HTML5 already works seamlessly on desktop com- puters, but requires the latest versions of the most pop- ular browsers to function properly; Internet Explorer 10, Chrome, Firefox etc. As operators continue to track the shift of customers to compatible browsers, Odobo believes that 2014 will be the year that HTML5 emerges

Another major shift will be the move towards native applications. Native apps are often contrasted with Web-based applications that are stored on a server and interpreted one line at a time by the browser's JavaScript or HTML5 interpreter. A native app, written for a specific hardware platform, will always run faster than a Web app, because there is no translation pro- cessing taking place. Odobo is looking to release its first


native play App in the second quarter of 2014. Offering a frameless browser application environment, with improved playability, the App saves all graphical assets locally, caching all the heavy assets so that players expe- rience an instant launch and fast uninterrupted HTML5 driven gameplay. HTML5 is the only route into the native App market and Odobo is looking at full spectrum distri- bution a little later this year.


Having put its faith in the universal recognition of HTML5 as the future industry standard, game developers signing-up to Odobo's development model from the out- set also took a leap of faith.
