It’s amazing, looking at the list of the gaming industry’s billionaires (pg 88), just how many hail from Asian markets. I imagined that the list might be split failrly evenly between the US and Asia, with a sprinkling of notable Europeans, but that’s simply not the case. The list is dominated by Asian entreprenuers, a fact that highlights a shift in the balance of global gaming influence. And it’s not just the local industry movers and shakers, but also the impact that Asia has had on American gaming billionaires, such as Sheldon Adelson and Steve Wynn, whose fortunes have increased exponentially thanks to their Asian ventures.
Lui Che Woo's spot at No.2 on the list charts a spectacular rise, just as so many featured have started from nothing to achieve their great gaming-propelled wealth. Having visited each of Galaxy’s locations in Macau, it was the launch of the flagship Galaxy Macau location that established the Galaxy Entertainment Group as not only a major money-maker in the marketplace, but a company with a vision for an Asian casino blueprint that was clearly grounded in the local market, but who also offered a global appeal and a clear identity unlike anything as yet offered by the West.
HOW LONG WILL IT BE BEFORE ASIA’S LOCAL GAME AND EQUIPMENT MARKET SHIFTS TO MATCH THE RANKS OF THE ASIAN CASINO OPERATORS?

As G2E Asia opens its doors this month in Macau, the importance of the Asian mar- ket and the impact on the global gaming industry will be front and centre, especial- ly with talk of Japan. And with Macau pushing for international suppliers to build and assemble locally, the Asian influence on gaming can only grow. Local equipment and game developers are on the rise and with governments seeking to autonomously control all aspects of gam- ing, how long will it be before the suppli- ers’ market shifts to match the ranks of the Asian casino operators?
