Theresa Schugel is EVP of global business development at BMS. In this role, she leads the US and UK reinsurance business production efforts—fostering synergy between reinsurance and all BMS teams. Schugel has more than 30 years of experience in the insurance/reinsurance market and joined BMS in November, 2010.
Prior to joining BMS, she spent four years leading Aon Benfield’s Global Healthcare Practice in addition to her role as global team leader on specific high profile accounts. She was also formerly the CEO of the Benfield subsidiary Paragon Strategic Solutions, and led the National Healthcare Origination Team for Benfield.
Before joining Benfield, she spent 14 years working for The St.
Paul Companies, primarily leading operations in the medical services division and as the ceded reinsurance buyer for all lines.
“There are so many highlights from different phases of my
career,” she says. “A highlight which has been a common theme for me has been the ability to lead teams of people towards a common goal. That’s what I love about it—taking a group of people and helping them see what that vision is and how we’re going to get there.”
Schugel has three daughters and her career has always required a substantial amount of travel.
“The challenge has always been how best to give both to my career
and to raising my three children,” she says. “I never wanted anyone to think I couldn’t do it because I chose to have children, and my girls are my world. The flip side of that is you have to say to yourself ‘maybe you can’t do it all’ or ‘I don’t need to do it all’ and you reach out to others where you need it. I’ve been very fortunate because I have an extremely patient and supportive husband.”
Schugel’s ambition for the future is to continue to lead and influence people. “I enjoy being a CEO as I was one in a previous company; I would look to do that again.”
