Women in reinsurance

PrOFILE Name:

Anna Manning

Company: Reinsurance Group of America Job:

EVP & head of US markets

Timeline: 2011—Appointed as EVP & head of US markets

2007—Joined Reinsurance Group of America

Anna Manning leads the largest business segment within Reinsurance Group of America (RGA), which posted more than $5.5 billion in revenue in 2012. Manning is also a member of the company’s executive council. Prior to taking on this role, she was the COO for RGA’s international business. She joined RGA in 2007 after more than 20 years in the consulting industry.

“I view my career not as comprising a single highlight but rather

as a series of highlights, including successes both large and small, that have built upon each other,” says Manning of her illustrious career. “Each provided a deeper, more layered understanding and perspective, which enabled me to recognise the opportunities and overcome the challenges.”

Manning highlights a few challenges as particularly tricky.

“Leading and guiding my teams through change has always been challenging, as has the pace and complexity of change facing RGA and other large organisations, which requires leaders to actively provide guidance and inspiration to their teams,” she says.

“Teams adapt to and embrace change when they understand

it and can visualise both the challenges and the opportunities involved. Aging populations, changing distribution models, regulatory changes, and other forces in the insurance industry are

just some of the environmental forces we face, requiring us to continually innovate and improve how we do business.”

An influential figure in the sector, Manning is keen to know

that she is making a difference to the industry—and she aims to continue with this ethos into 2014. “It is important to me to know that I am making a difference, in terms of the success of RGA, the success of the people around me, and the success of the industry as a whole,” she says.

“In the areas of business in which RGA operates, there are

many challenges, but always an opportunity to innovate to find a creative solution—which makes mine a very interesting career.”

“Aging populations, changing distribution models, regulatory changes, and other forces in the insurance industry are just some of the environmental forces we face.”
