Women in reinsurance
PrOFILE Name:
Sharon Ludlow
Company: Swiss Re Canada Job:
President and CEO
Timeline: 2005—Swiss Re Canada 2000—Launched Kanetix
Sharon Ludlow is responsible for property & casualty and life & health reinsurance operations in Canada. Her previous experience also includes senior finance positions in a commercial property & casualty insurance company and a life insurance company. She played a key role in the demutualisation and IPO of Canada Life Financial and launched Kanetix—a consumers’ online insurance quotation service company.
Ludlow has served as chair of the Financial Affairs Committee
and is a member of the Adaptation to Climate Change Steering Committee of the Insurance Bureau of Canada. She is a member of the Reinsurance Committee of the Canadian Life & Health Insurance Association. In addition, she serves as a director of the Institute for Catastrophic Loss Reduction.
“One of the more interesting changes that I’ve made in my
career along the way was to start a company that was part of a large life insurance company,” she says. “We started an online insurance quotation service in early 2000, which was effectively for P&C business. It was an interesting change in what I’d done to date in setting out on our own and starting a business from scratch.”
She has taken a number of opportunities throughout her career
that have been leaps of faith. “When I moved from the life insurance industry to P&C, clearly that was a challenge in terms of coming into an industry with an entirely different dialect.”
She remains open-minded about her future career path. “Who
knows what the future will bring? Clearly I have a fabulous position where I am now in our marketplace and within Swiss Re.
“It will just be a question of where and what can provide those
new and interesting opportunities in the future. I will evaluate all of them and I am not afraid to take on something a little bit outside of my comfort zone to learn something new.”
“Who knows what the future will bring? Clearly I have a fabulous position where I am now in our marketplace and within Swiss Re.”
