PrOFILE Name:

Kathleen Faries

Company: Tokio Solution Management Job:

Chief executive officer

Timeline: 2012—Tokio Solution Management 2007—Tokio Millennium Re 2004—Crump International Ltd 1999—Marsh Management Services

Kathleen Faries is CEO of Tokio Solution Management (TSM), a wholly owned subsidiary of Tokio Millennium Re (TMR). She has more than 25 years of experience in the insurance and reinsurance field including broking into the US, London and Bermuda markets as well as developing and managing captive insurance companies.

Prior to starting up TSM in 2012, Faries had been in charge

of the Market Solutions unit at TMR which was responsible for managing the fronting and transforming services TMR provided to capital market entities as well as underwriting a portfolio of industry loss warranties and catastrophe bonds.

Faries serves on the boards of WiRe (Women in Reinsurance)

and ILS Bermuda. “The highlights of my career are usually when I have been afforded an opportunity to take on a challenge or goal that is outside if my expertise or comfort zone but find a way to overcome the challenge or accomplish the goal successfully,” she says.

“I have been afforded numerous opportunities during my

career to expand on my knowledge base and skillset, for which I am grateful. Establishing an insurance management subsidiary and segregated account reinsurer for TMR in 2012 was clearly a challenge and stretch for me but such a thrill to accomplish. We now have a fantastic team in place and are building a great platform for our group.”

She says the biggest challenge of her career has been making the transition from line manager to organisational leader. “My

roles in the past have been to make things happen and get the job done, which I really enjoy,” she says.

“Now my job is more about facilitating a culture and environment

that helps others to maximise their personal and professional potential. Relinquishing some of my prior duties and responsibilities to others has been a difficult transition. Moving from the person ‘doing’ to the person ‘coaching’ has not been easy!

“Building our new entities into solid profit making enterprises

for TMR is my focus. I will continue to work on growing and developing my leadership capabilities. The opportunity to motivate and inspire the group of accomplished and dedicated professionals I have on my team is a real privilege. Taking our third party capital platform beyond our current service offering is also something we aspire to do over the long term.”
