Timeline: 2010—Vice chairman of international operations, Guy Carpenter

2004—Chairman UK & Ireland, Towers Watson

1992—Founder and managing director, Dunn & Carter

Victoria Carter is vice chairman of international operations for Guy Carpenter & Company and a member of the firm’s board of managers. She is a key member of the Guy Carpenter International Leadership team and is responsible for driving new business production across the firm’s international operations. She also plays a significant role in supporting and cultivating senior client and industry relationships internationally across the UK and Continental Europe.

Carter has 34 years of experience in the reinsurance industry,

after becoming a London broker in 1979. She co-founded the broking operation Dunn & Carter in 1992, which was sold to E.W. Blanch (now Aon Benfield) in 1998, and was the first female founder of a Lloyd’s intermediary. She has also operated in a number of senior executive positions within the broking sector. She most recently served as chairman of the UK and international operations of Towers Watson.

“I feel extremely fortunate to have had many highlights in my

career, but I think the satisfaction of becoming, at the age of 32, the first female founder of a Lloyd’s broking operation in its 325- year history remains my favourite,” she says.

Carter says that in the past, business organisations in general

were fundamentally biased against women. This has changed significantly now.

“When I entered the market in 1979, there were very few

women in the industry. But that was exciting for me and I saw it as a challenge as opposed to a threat. I just decided to work as hard as I could and hopefully be recognised on my ability and my achievements, regardless of my gender,” she says.

Carter says she is ambitious and very competitive by nature and

her aspirations change continually. However, the one constant is that she wants to bring exceptional value to her clients, especially as they continually face new and often unexpected market challenges.

“My current role is very much focused on business development

across Guy Carpenter’s international operations,” she says. “This is a challenging time, and we are facing significant rapid and fundamental change in our industry like never before. And these are changes that I don’t see reversing, or certainly not in the near future.

“The key to success is anticipating our clients’ needs through

such changes. They are seeing new global risks emerge, whether it is through climate change or the likes of cyber risk. They are entering new geographic markets that require a high level of business intelligence and sophistication. And of course, there is a need to discover new trading partnerships that can provide valuable trading opportunities.

“I want to ensure that Guy Carpenter, with its vast resources

and depth of talent, is helping our clients meet those challenges and achieve profitable growth.”
