Susan Cross leads and oversees all major actuarial functions for the company worldwide, including the establishment of unpaid loss and loss expense reserves, pricing benchmarks and related financial provisions. She joined the company in 1999 as senior vice president and chief actuary of XL America. In August 2004, she was named senior vice president and chief actuarial officer of XL’s reinsurance operations.

She was responsible for all actuarial functions for the company’s

reinsurance segment including pricing, reserving and capital and catastrophe management. Cross was also responsible for strategic planning and ceded reinsurance for XL’s reinsurance operations.

Prior to joining the company, she was principal and consulting actuary for Tillinghast-Towers Perrin. She is a fellow of the Casualty Actuarial Society, an associate of the Society of Actuaries and a member of the American Academy of Actuaries.

Cross prides herself on being part of the team. “Few periods

have been as defining for the financial services industry, or for me personally, as the crises of 2008/2009,” she says. “That XL Group is now stronger than ever, with enormous potential in front of us, is a great achievement. I take great pride in being part of the team that has led XL Group through the last few years.”

She is quick to add that in this industry, you are always faced

with new challenges to overcome. “The crises of the late 2000s were an enormous test, but then it was a task to survive at all. Today, the competitive reinsurance market makes it a challenge to thrive,” she says.

With a heavy focus on XL’s future, Cross is keen to add value

to not just the company, but the industry too. “Beyond helping to take XL Group to the next level, I intend to look for ways to give back to the actuarial profession and help the next generation of our colleagues realise the tremendous opportunities the industry provides,” she says.

“Particularly now when there are daily advances in the use of data and analytics, it’s a field with limitless possibilities.”
