80 GUILD NEWS

With just over three years under its belt, the Beauteco salon inMilton Keynes feels as fresh as the day it opened its doors. With immaculate and colourful décor, the salon has found the perfect balance between professionalismand fun, with the brighter colours adding a touch of character that many salons tend to shy away from.

But it’s not just the décor that has found the rightmix, prior to attending the appointment, I’d checked out the Beauteco Facebook page to get a feel for the salon and its staff, and came across some amazing nail art created by Lucy – the half- eaten gingerbreadman is undoubtedly one of quirkiest takes on festive nail art that I’ve ever seen. It also gaveme an insight that this salon, and in particular its staff, had somethingmore to offer than just a great service – they had an abundance of personality to share too, which with an average of 210 clients stepping through their doors a week this is nomean feat!

Salon Spy spoke to owner Gisela Cleary andmanager LucyTurner to discovermore about the origins of the business and find out how they’vemanaged to create such a successful enterprise in themidst of a double-dip recession.

So, how did you come to open your salon?

“I was feeling stressed working as a PA / OfficeManager in London when I heard a piece on Radio 4 about people who worked in the Beauty / Hair industry being the most happiest in their jobs and finding their careers the most fulfilling. So, at the age of 48 I decided to retrain in Beauty and Holistic therapies at Northampton College.

“I qualified two years later and began running my own beauty business from home, but after a while my treatments were so in demand that I often found I was needing to allocate two or even three rooms at home purely to the beauty salon. This spurred me into taking the plunge and opening the salon in its own dedicated premises,” explains Gisela.

What would you saymakes your salon unique?

“We have combined the quality of a country manor with the locality and friendliness often found in a High Street salon. Clients sometimes just pop in to say hello and have a cup of coffee in between appointments if they are passing – they know they will always be welcome.
