Let’s face it, if it was that easy there wouldn’t be somany businesses that disappear as quickly as they appeared or therapists who return to a salon job. Don’t getme wrong, it is very flattering (and a little annoying) that people want to replicatemy business but it is also infuriating because no one sees all the work that goes on behind the scenes – all of which ismy sole responsibility.

To own your own business or work for yourself you have to be self-motivated, it really won’t work if you aren’t. No one else is going to go out there and sell your business with the same passion and enthusiasmthat you will. Even when you have no bookings you have to be sourcing new business and generally promoting yourself to increase awareness.

There are somany things to consider when starting your business and it isn’t as easy as just getting your qualification, buying your equipment, obtaining premises – or deciding to gomobile – and just getting on with it. If it were that easy there would be lots of long-standing and successful businesses, but there aren’t. Most people fall at the first hurdle withmost businesses folding within the first two years.

I have a lot of students who consider the Starting In BusinessWorkshop and other business-based workshops that I run as unnecessary as they think they know how to start and run their own businesses.Afewmonths later they return wanting to do the course having spent a lot of wasted time andmoney on things because they just didn’t know what they were doing.

Business workshops are invaluable – youmay well be a very good and competent therapist but that doesn’tmake you a good business woman. After all you have never owned a business before have you? Therefore it is all new territory for you, just like your first salon job would have been. Owning a business is the same, although you have worked in someone else’s business and no doubt witnessed things that you thought were good ideas and bad ideas in equal quantities it is very different when it is your own.

For the first time in years there are nowmore home-based andmobile beauty businesses than there are high street salons, the successful ones will only be long standing and achieve their goals by determination and thorough planning. You are only going to get one shot atmaking a first impression on your target audience so don’t rush it and plan it thoroughly, take your time and don’t launch your business in a hurry. Themore preparation and planning you do before you start themore successful and prepared your business will be.

Good luck with it, and a Happy New BusinessYear!
