IN THE Italian city of Aosta, the capital of Italy’s Valle d’Aosta regio – so far north- west that French is one of the two official languages – an ex-cinema recently reopened following lengthy restoration work. It has been transformed into a full-blown theatre and conference venue, involving a total investment of €14.8 million. In 2009, Decima Italia won the tender integrated with the executive design called for by the regional government of Valle d’Aosta. The €3 million project included all the stage equipment and curtains, Liftech and Verlinde hoists, audio systems, conference simultaneous translation facilities, video projection and HD video coverage, intercom, LDR lighting fixtures and ETC

lighting control, as well as the rooms’ acoustic treatment, acoustic shell, seating and fittings.

The Decima team with hands-on involvement in the project included veteran senior technician Massimo Daniele (who has been with the firm for over 30 years and is an authorised/qualified Cinemeccanica, Dolby Surround, THX, ETC, Barco, Panasonic, Sony, JBL, Bose and Bosch technician) and junior technician Matteo Moro (qualified ETC and Verlinde Stagemaker technician). Daniele explains: “We chose all the AV and lighting equipment following the tender’s guidelines: the video set-up was designed by Enzo Trovato, whereas the stage lighting project and design was by Guido Orlandi. As far

as the audio was concerned, we entrusted the design work to Guido Diamanti of pro-audio distributor Exhibo.” Moro continues: “With the

region’s works manager on the project, architect Dante Stacchetti, Decima made use of the technical consultancy and expertise of Claudio Cantele, technical director of Turin’s Teatro Stabile.”

MAIN THEATRE After the lengthy restoration work (slowed up considerably by problems with the delicate situation regarding the disposal of the asbestos found in the old building and amendments to earthquake regulations), the client wanted the venue to be its key theatre. Decima’s brief was to equip a multipurpose main room (seating at least

500), enabling it to host prose readings, concerts, small opera productions, conferences and projections. Due to administrative

problems, the 2009 tender only got the go-ahead in 2011, so a technical update was necessary. The video system was upgraded to Full HD and the system features a Crestron DigitalMedia DM-MD16X16-RPS matrix switcher, able to handle analogue and digital signals and 1080p Deep Color, and two Crestron TPMC-8X WiFi touchpanels for control. Moro adds: “The stage at the Splendor, now the Aosta Regional Theatre, is not particularly deep, so a motorised apron platform was installed to provide extra performance space. This area can also be used as an

orchestra pit. This meant having two curtains, two projection screens and flying the two main audio clusters with chain hoists mounted on trolleys, enabling them to be moved horizontally to make room for the acoustic ceiling extension when the orchestra pit is used.” The two 10K projectors originally spec’d for the main room were replaced by a single Panasonic PT- DZ12000E unit (12K, 1,920 x 1,200, 16:9 video and 16:10 data), an image scaler and motorised zoom, ensuring perfect projection on either of the screens without any need for mechanical adjustment.
