FEATURE: OIL AND GAS “We also provide a range of
advanced visualisation products for upstream applications,” he continues, “that allow users to display 2D and 3D stereo data simultaneously. Barco has developed a portfolio of immersive solutions that range from 3D stereo projectors to high-resolution stereoscopic display walls.” RGB Spectrum is also
focused on control rooms and visualisation. “Our control room
management solutions integrate multiple disparate systems under a single interface, with plug-and-play installation and drag-and-drop simplicity,” says Jed Deame, the company’s VP of marketing. “Multiple users can access any system asset as per pre-defined access controls, and asset arbitration is supported through a simple ‘chat’ interface.”
“Our visualisation solutions,” he goes on, “provide cost-effective large-scale visualisation through multiviewers at up to 4K resolution and videowalls up to 32 screens in size. Our videowall systems support dual-link outputs and overlapping displays to drive edge-blended projectors as well.” Saudi Aramco set up its
Upstream Professional Development Center (UPDC) to train the company’s oil engineers and it’s using Christie’s 3D CAVE (Cave Automatic Virtual Environment). Christie products are also used in seismic data analysis for both operations and field development activities which use large-scale 3D power- walls and curved screen environments.
CHALLENGES – AND OPPORTUNITIES The worldwide scale, and often remote operational locations that characterise oil and gas companies also presents challenges – and opportunities. “Oil production operations
involve multifunctional teams from geologists, production technologists and reservoir engineers to process engineers, well engineers and others,” points out Natalie Harris, head of marketing at UK distributor Steljes. “Traditionally, they work in silos with very little interaction but it is important
that they come together and understand each other’s activities, constraints and issues. This is where SMART Board interactive whiteboards, Meeting Pro collaboration software and Bridgit data conferencing software are making an impact.” “It’s an increasingly important sector for us,” says Darren Gaffey, pan-EU product planning manager at Sharp. “Our new 32in IGZO QFHD displays feature extremely high resolution, enabling them to be used as monitors for mining surveyors to study geological scans when looking for new gas and
LEARNING THE LANGUAGE
The starting point for anyone planning to get involved in the oil and gas industry is to speak the language… The industry is usually divided into three major sectors: upstream, midstream and downstream. The upstream sector includes the searching for potential underground or underwater crude oil and natural gas fields, drilling of exploratory wells, and drilling and operating the wells that recover and bring the crude
oil and/or raw natural gas to the surface. The downstream sector
refers to the refining of petroleum crude oil and the processing and purifying of raw natural gas, as well as the marketing and distribution of products derived from crude oil and natural gas. The midstream sector
involves the transportation (by pipeline, rail, barge, or truck), storage, and wholesale marketing of crude or refined petroleum products.
‘The merging of 2D and 3D is
more prevalent in the oil and gas market’
