Three hundred people congregated on the Ministry of Sound in London last month for the inaugural Pro Sound Awards, where presentations were made in a total of 16 categories. Here are some of the winners – for the full list, go to

INSTALLATION TEAM OF THE YEAR
The team of the year award – sponsored, along with the other installation categories, by
Genelec – was won by Wigwam Acoustics. When we spoke to the company ahead of the Awards, installations manager Tim Mortimer told us that “a lot of people see Wigwam just as a very large touring and hire company, even though we’ve done installations for years. It’s quite nice to be recognised.” Just after collecting the team trophy, director Mick Spratt joked that the event was “too loud, too bright – but apart from that it’s wonderful. It’s like going to work!”
PERMANENT INSTALLATION PROJECT OF THE YEAR
The permanent project award was won by Funktion One for a rather unusual installation for the toboggan run at the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics – including what is believed to be the world’s biggest ‘mega bass horn’. “The Sochi installation was one of many things we did last year,” said company founder Tony Andrews (left of picture). “ Working in Russia is quite interesting, quite an experience. They had the vision to go with what we were suggesting and they’re very happy with it.”
TEMPORARY INSTALLATION PROJECT OF THE YEAR
The temporary project accolade went to Sennheiser for its work on the David Bowie Is exhibition at London’s V&A, which ran earlier this year. “It was an incredibly complex
installation but the team within Sennheiser made it work,” said the company’s Alan March. “There were lots of different elements to pull together but we did it and the result was a record-breaking show for the V&A. We’ve got to give credit to the V&A – they’re absolutely top-dollar people.” March also paid tribute to the Awards themselves: “The show is great – really, really good. Considering it’s an inaugural event – great turnout, lots of good people. Fantastic.”
LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT
Although he described himself as “completely overwhelmed” at winning, Andy Munro of acoustic consultancy and facility designer Munro Acoustics was keen to share the credit for his award with the rest of his company. “We’ve worked with just about everyone – not just the studios but the bands, the producers, the musicians. I think we just had a simple common goal – it’s all about the sound.” The Awards were “brilliant”, he added. “I’m amazed by how many people are here – top people in the industry as well – it’s a great event. By far the best show in the industry.”
GRAND PRIX
James Gordon, managing director of award sponsor DiGiCo, said he was determined to get the most from his investment and called his team up onto the stage to join him in presenting the Grand Prix award to the British Entertainment Industry Radio Group (BEIRG). Accepting the award, John Steven
pointed out that, because of the group’s work, the UK is the only country where the PMSE sector has received government funding to compensate for losses arising from spectrum sell-off – and there remains important work to be done. “But for now, thank you very much!” he concluded.
MARKETING INITIATIVE/CAMPAIGN OF THE YEAR
This award, sponsored by PLASA London, went to Soundcraft Studer for the Si Performer campaign. Product manager Sean Karpowicz said: “It’s a great payoff. We put a lot into the campaign. We have some really great people that think up some really amazing solutions. It’s really rewarding for our work to be seen and recognised.” An aspect of the Awards that he highlighted was that “it’s great to see people being celebrated beyond just sales – seeing a wider audience saying, ‘Yeah, that was really great work’.”
