Here are two views of the first run of DL&W cabooses with the stoves at the end of the car. The broadside of the 607 (above) was a company photo. A close look through the window on the right shows the stove pipe. This roster shot from a real photo postcard (below), is the only known image of one in the bobber scheme. Note that the car is not numbered.

from the TRRA Historical Society, P.O. Box 1688,

St.

http://trra-hts.railfan.net/). That brings the total on the TRRA up to five former- DL&W cabooses, from the three listed. Al Baumann from central New Jer-

sey included a very nice picture taken by the late Fred Diebert of Raritan River No. 7 in service that clearly shows from the position of the smoke- jack that the stove was near the center of the car. With that stove position this car could not be DL&W 604 as report- ed, which had its stove at one end. I’ll try to visit the No. 7 at Allaire State Park for further research.

Some good news and a current photo came from Terry Holley who reports that Ashley, Drew & Northern caboose No. 16 is alive and well in Glenwood, Arkansas, on a piece of panel track near the depot. He states that it may be for sale. I have been trying to track down oth-

er reported survivors. The 849 that had been in South Williamsport was sold to a private party and moved out of public view. Gainesville Midland 607 exists at Lakeview Park in Gainesville, Georgia, RAILROAD MODEL CRAFTSMAN

Louis, MO 63188;

as does Crown Zellerbach “B” in a park in Bogalusa, Louisiana. The Raritan River No. 8 is along the New Hope & Ivyland in Ivyland, Pennsylvania, as part of a commercial business. The 845 is in Effort, Pennsylvania, as a private cabin, another is on the Gunlocke estate in Wayland, New York, and one recently turned up as an office at an industrial site in Eighty Four, Pennsylvania, along State Rt. 519. One of the best known examples is Lackawanna 738 in Horse- heads, N.Y., located behind Sullivan’s Diner. There are rumors of DSS&A/ Soo Line 597 surviving in Burlington, Wisconsin, and one of the C&IM ca- booses as a summer home, but photos haven’t yet surfaced and field visits are yet to be made. As always, I appreciate any help with

research, at: mdelvec952@aol.com. I plan to expand the RMC articles into book form for the Tri-State Chapter NRHS (www.tristaterail.org) to help support the Lackawanna F3’s in Scranton and Lackawanna steel caboose 896, both owned and restored by the Chapter, which is celebrating its 50th Anniver- sary in 2014.–MIKE DEL VECCHIO
