The Maitland Tower kit builds into a model of the tower's initial configuration and can be modified to represent a number of other Erie west end towers. Maitland also broke up the block between Glen Echo and Cold Springs on the Dayton Branch and was used by the DT&I to issue trains orders. This served to extend the tower life more than anything else and remained in service well into the Conrail years. Crossing Shanty not included

hen I first came to Carstens in early 1981, my job was to work with both RMC and Railfan as


an associate editor. I had been a con- tributor to Railfan for a few years and Jim Boyd was instrumental in bringing me on board. It soon became apparent, however, that working on the two maga- zines was not practical. RMC kept pret- ty regular 9-5 business hours, while Jim would come in around noon, then leave for lunch, come back in the mid-after- noon and end up working all hours of the night. For Jim, who was single, this schedule worked fine, but I was newly married and planned to stay that way. Plus putting out RMC each month, which was a much larger magazine, in- volved a lot more work than the then much smaller Railfan, which was on an every other month schedule. So I

No longer in service, Ashley, Drew & North- ern No. 16 (right) still shows off the steel- sided version of this caboose (which Scott Lupia models in this issue). Note the re- placement aluminum windows on the sides.

DL&W caboose wrap up


DL&W caboose article follow up In the effort to keep the DL&W ca- boose article succinct in the July, 2013 RMC, I inadvertently overwrote (and therefore accidentally deleted) a sen- tence that mentioned that the first twenty of these cabooses, 600-619, had stoves


located


in the B-end corner,


rather than near the center as with the rest of the fleet. This is an important detail for modelers as the smokejack would be near one end, and the chim- ney pipe was visible through the win- dows.
