“State of Maine” scheme had to be espe- cially difficult to paint as the three colors span the entire side of the car. The lines travel up and over all of the molded box- car detail flawlessly and remain straight from end to end. The separations are crisp and clean with no paint bleed any- where. The lettering is very neat as well. The colors are all appropriate and evenly applied. The yellow paint of the CP Rail boxcars is especially stunning. All cars except for the two that I pre- viously mentioned feature photo- etched roofwalks and brake wheel plat- forms. I’m a very big fan of this. Cars spend a majority of their life sitting on our layouts being viewed from up above as most people don’t have lay- outs at eye level. I always find myself staring directly at boxcar roofs. These etched roof walks are a treat to look at. They are attached to the car neatly and the paintwork on the roofwalks is flawless. There is nothing worse than receiving a car that touts etched roofwalks only to find that the fine holes of the roofwalks are plugged up with paint and glue from a less than careful installation. The cars that are not equipped with roofwalks do have the roof supports left behind, which is correct for the prototype.
The underside of the car is well exe-
cuted. All of the major brake rigging is located where it should be. The little propane heater is also a neat little ap- pliance. It sits midway between the center of the car and the truck. To me, 40-foot boxcars all tend to look the
same, but when I see this car rolling by with that propane heater sticking out, I know that this car is a little different from the rest. The side and end detail is also well done. The door stops, vents, door latches, ladders and rigging area are all nicely molded.
The cars are equipped with Micro- Trains trucks and wheelsets. Another huge plus is that the cars have body- mounted Micro-Trains couplers in- stalled. The performance of a car with body-mounted couplers is far superior to those with truck mounted couplers. You will see that if you try to back a long train around your layout. I wish more manufacturers would adopt this feature and make it standard. On the back of each jewel case is a small box containing information about the cars service date and if known, the photo date. This informa- tion allows the modeler choose a car that is correct to their era. I applaud Eastern Seaboard Models for including this information. I really don’t like pur- chasing a car and then finding out that it is not correct for my era! The era of the 40-foot boxcar was a great one. Cars had elaborate paint schemes and made trains fun to watch. Those days are long gone, but with these cars you can capture that feel on your model railroad. Packed with superior de- tailing and dead-nuts prototype accura- cy, these cars are a must have for fans of the 40-footer. The ESMC 40-foot XIH boxcars are available now and have a list price of $29.95.–SCOTT LUPIA
