The simulated latch on the front of the hatch cover is made from .010″ wire with an eye bolt (above left). On the rear of the hatch cover (above right) .010″ wire was used for the hinge rod and three pieces of electrical wire insulation were used to represent the bar-


mounting plates. The bottom of the hatch bases must be sanded to match the curve of the tank. I wrapped a piece of sand paper around a ³₄″ copper plumbing coupling and carefully sanded the bases. Once the bases were sanded, a filler piece had to be added to the bot- tom of the outside hatches to match the step-up the wrapper creates. As finish- ing touches, eye bolts and .010″ wire were used for latches and .010″ wire with three pieces of wire insulation was used for the hinge rods and barrels. The “Type 17” tank car featured a

ners of the running boards. The tank saddle was assembled, but I removed the supports, leaving the web that joins the two sides together. The web area of the bolster (A12) was also removed, ex- cept in the center where it attaches to the frame. Material from both sides of the bottom bolster plate also needed to be removed to a width of 7′-6″ and then it was tapped for a 2-56׳₁₆″ truck mounting screw. The running boards (A11) were cemented to the frame and new triangular bolster/tank pad sup- ports were constructed using .020″ styrene and they were attached to the saddle and bolster bottom plate. (See photo below). A .015″×.080″ styrene brace was added from the bottom of the running board to the triangular (saddle)


Since the author was modeling a number of these cars, he decided to make RTV molds of some of the parts and cast them in resin. Here (above) is the mold box with the masters ready for casting the hatches and, alongside that, are the parts used for the discharge hopper masters.
