through virgin forests of towering Dou- glas firs and over land rich with buried seams of coal. During the first half of the twentieth century, trains were pow- ered by a mix of classic CPR 4-4-0’s, 4-6- 0’s and 2-8-0’s, as well as a few switch- ers working the yards. Passengers traveled in handsome wooden cars, while steamboats and tug-pulled barges ferried passengers and freight between the island and the mainland. A railroad of this nature is worthy of a special volume to tell its story and this wonderfully written and illustrated book does it justice. The volume covers the railway’s first 65 years, with em- phasis on the period between 1905 and 1949–the Canadian Pacific’s steam era on the island. A second volume, due out shortly, will cover the diesel years. The E&N came about in part due to a deal made between the residents of British Columbia and the Confedera- tion of Canada, which promised, in 1871,

to link the western-most province and the rest of the country by rail. However, with British Columbia’s capital, Victoria, located on Vancouver Island, it proved impractical to link the city directly by rail. So, the CPR’s transcontinental line ended at Burrard Inlet, on the western shore of British Columbia’s mainland, and the island ended up with the Esquimalt & Nanaimo Railway linking the towns along its eastern coast. Behind the E&N was Robert Dun-


smuir, who owned coal mines on the is- land and just happened to be the province’s richest industrialist, and his son, James. Additional backing came from the builders of the Central Pacific Railroad. The railroad received a sub- sidy from the Federal Government, as well as a huge land grant rich in tim- ber resources.


Construction of the line between Es-


quimalt, just across the harbor from Victoria, and Nanaimo began in 1884. The 72.5 mile route was completed two years later. Two years after that, the railroad was extended south into Victo- ria and north to Wellington and the Dunsmuir’s coal mines. The following year Robert Dunsmuir died and his son took over the operations of the rail- way, although coal mining remained his primary interest.


By the early years of the twentieth century the railway was in need of up- grading. At the same time, the Canadi- an Pacific was looking to expand its op- erations so, in 1905, the E&N was sold to the CPR.


Once the CPR purchased the rail-


way, it began making improvements. Freight traffic grew and plans were made for a new line to tap the timber resources in the Cowichan Valley. Bridges and trestles were rebuilt and replaced, new equipment was brought in, a new roundhouse and shops were constructed in Victoria and other ex- tensions were planned. A line was built
