EVER HEARD OF A TOWN CALLED MELLE IN GERMANY? NO, I HADN’T EITHER...
SOMETIMES while on tour I stumble across a club or event that really takes me by surprise in a positive way. Sfera is one of those places, located in Melle, Germany, yeah I know, I had never heard of this place either but that didn’t deter me.
It must be noted that Germany has had some great clubs over the years but with the recent closure of Sven Vath’s iconic club ‘Cocoon’, could there be room for a new crown for the best club in the country?
Well read on and let’s find out about this hidden gem!
THE CLUB I always like big main room clubs that keep it simple, this place is a perfect ex- ample of that. There’s certain key points to getting a nightclub design right, from making sure the DJ / stage is a focal point to arranging the soundsystem to compliment the environment its housed in. So many clubs get it wrong, but Sfera was pretty flawless. Not forgetting the superb lighting system complete with giant high def LED screen set across the back wall behind the DJ booth.
One major stand out element was a bizarre yet impressive main room feature that can only be described as a giant color changing octopus above the dance- floor. Check the pictures!
ENTERTAINMENT Anyone who’s been to ibiza knows the island offers some of the best clubs, big- gest DJ lineups but also many of the best club entertainers too. From the stunning dancers to the multi-skill performers, ibiza has the finest. Well Sfera is one club that prides itself on the same philoso- phy, the addition of great acts can add so much to a night.
THE NIGHT, THE CROWD Ok so language was an issue here, not many people spoke English but this isn’t a spot for the international clubber, this is the place where locals come to embrace dance music and let loose. You maybe lost in translation but the connection you have on the dancefloor is universal, unified as one with your hands in the air feeling every beat, this night can be enjoyed by all.
MUSIC AND DJs I do sometimes worry when entering these out of city venues around Europe, the amount of times i’ve walked into a sound of ‘Eurotrash 140bpm dance’ in other clubs still amazes me, but Sfera was different. Just looking at the lineup of DJs who have graced the decks you
