You have now successfully released all 3 parts of your debut album “Eject”. Did you have any clear goals for this album such as experimenting with various genres or incorporating any certain stylistic element?
Sebastian: Yeah definitely. Our main goal was to make something different and try to not have any strict rules about making it a certain genre. We just wanted to experiment between dubstep and house and maybe throw in some hip-hop. We didn’t want to have any restrictions; we just did whatever we wanted.
A lot of artists choose to release singles for their albums rather than a couple songs at a time. Could you tell us why you decided to have 3 “parts” to your album rather than just release singles or release the entire album at one time?
Alex: I think it’s a great way to keep your fans involved. Instead of just putting it out there in one hit, you just keep them involved longer in the process. Plus it’s a great advantage for us too since we are doing this exclusive collaboration with Spotify. We could actually take feedback from the different parts and choose what will be different about our next release. For example, if fans commented on the first part, we could take that with us into the second part and we wouldn’t have been able to do that without releasing each part separately.
You are the first artists to release an album exclusively on Spotify. Your manager said, “Streaming is the future: it’s where it needs to go.” Since listeners are unable to buy or download the album from Spotify, what sort of reactions have you received from fans or other artists about choosing this route?
Sebastian: I think the reactions were different from person to person. If you look at Facebook statuses and comments…I think a lot of people actually don’t like it. I think there were a lot of Canadians who were pretty upset because they don’t have Spotify in Canada yet, but it’s coming. I understand them and I feel sorry for them, but this is what we wanted to do and what we think people will like. I think the fans that really are with us enjoy it and want to be a part of it as well. So yeah, I think the reaction has been different.
Alex: It’s been such a big part of our lives from the start actually. I was actually with Spotify right from the beginning. When I found out about it, I wanted it right away. Not to sound like we are promoting them but for real we started using Spotify in the very beginning.
Sebastian: I want to tell a really quick story. I was actually one of the first hundred people in Sweden ever to get Spotify because a close friend of mine won a contest through Spotify. She got invites, so she invited me.
Whether it’s one or two years down the road, do you have any plans in the future to release the “Eject” album on Beatport or iTunes?
Alex: Yes, this collaboration is exclusive for a while, but we tend to put it out somewhere else too.
You’ve already received a lot of recognition from all three parts of your “Eject” album, especially your song “Beam Me Up.” Which song means the most to the both of you and is there any particular reason this song has stood out from the rest?
Alex: I think for me it would definitely be “Beam Me Up” because that’s still the track that kind of started off our career.
Sebastian: Yeah that was the first song to really make it big. We were really happy. I remember touring with Avicii for the college tour, we got so many good responses and so that’s been the track.
Should Cazzette fans be expecting a tour to go along with the full album release? www.djmag.ca
Alex: Yes, we have been touring with the album release party for about a month and we try to play as much of our own music as possible at pretty much every show… maybe not every track from the “Eject” album, but at least a couple. So yeah, I guess that the answer would be yes.
