E-Z Model Railroads The E-Z Track®

Planning Guide & Layout Book T

hroughout the years of writing for RMC I have had the opportu- nity to talk with many manufac-

turers about their products, and occa- sionally we have discussed how their models and kits are made. While at- tending the NMRA Mid-Continent Re- gion Convention in St Louis this past spring I had the opportunity to sit down with John Hitzeman, of American Mod- el Builders, to discuss in general terms how laser-cut kits are designed and manufactured. I want to thank him for taking his time to review this process so it can be shared here.

While we may be inclined to take to- day’s highly detailed structure and

rolling stock kits for granted, our dis- cussion of the manufacturing process showed that it is quite involved and time consuming. Here is a general out- line of what is involved in making these kits.

Ideas for kits and models can come from within or from outside of the com- pany. They may be from first-hand ob- servations, articles in the model press, or prototype drawings of something that will fit a wide interest in the mod- eling community. After a project has been selected, it must be evaluated to determine if it is practical to manufac- ture, choices made for the production methods and the materials for its parts, see if it can be manufactured at a cost that will allow for an acceptable retail selling price, and if, in fact, it has enough appeal that will result in adequate sales to cover the develop- ment and manufacturing costs, thus providing a reasonable profit.
