Testor’s® Dullcote to seal the overlay. Pre-stained and distressed wood trim was then added to finish the loading dock/foundation. The final result is surprisingly effective.
With the base completed, the pre- painted walls were assembled. Alpine provides pre-cut pieces for corner brac- ing which yielded a sturdy and square finished building. The fit of the laser- cut parts was perfect. Once dry, corner and door trim was applied along with the cardstock roof bases. Before gluing the completed building assembly to the foundation, the doors and windows were installed and the windows glazed. The two small freight doors for the lean-to on the building’s end did re- quire some trimming and fitting. This task was not difficult, however, and should be expected when building craftsman type kits.
Final assembly required the roof shingle overlay to be trimmed and ap-
plied to the cardstock roof panels. These were cut from the brown printed “shingle” sheet provided and attached with Aleene’s Tacky Glue. Again the sheets were rolled down flat onto the roof using a craft brayer.
A package of additional details is in- cluded in the kit to add interest to the loading dock. A coal bin, full sacks, 55 gallon drums, steps and an assortment of ladders are provided in this package. The final step in finishing the model centers on painting and adding these details to the model.
The Orleans Freight House model ef- fectively captures a long lived building that was integral to the railroad indus- try from the 1860’s through the 1950’s. Alpine Division Scale Models has incor- porated new technologies with top qual- ity materials to produce a unique crafts- man style kit that is both fun to build and easy to assemble. The price of the the kit is $43.99.–GEORGE RILEY
