Alpine Division Scale Models is of- fering a HO scale craftsman kit based on the Orleans, Massachusetts, freight house to compliment their previously released Rural New Haven Passenger Station kit. The simplified Greek Re- vival style prototype for the model was originally constructed by the Cape Cod Railroad Company around 1865. The line would later become the Old Colony Railroad’s Cape Cod Branch in 1872. The Old Colony subsequently was ab- sorbed into the New York, New Haven & Hartford Railroad in 1893. The building remained in service for almost a century until the abandonment of the line through Orleans in 1959, at which time the freight house was demolished. The freight house kit consists of laser-cut walls, pre-cut cardstock, bal- sa and basswood strip wood, injection molded styrene windows, doors and de- tails in addition to printed paper and cardstock overlays. rated laser-cut and pre-cut pieces into a conventional craftsman style kit. These updates make for a kit that is easier to construct while yielding a model with enhanced accuracy. Prior to assembly, all of the card and wood parts were sealed with sanding sealer, primed and painted. While this step does take time to complete, it will minimize warping and makes for a more durable and cleaner model. The loading dock and foundation were built while the final color coat of paint was drying on the other pieces. This assembly uses balsa strips which are then overlaid with paper printed with weathered wood grained boards. The overlay was glued down with Aleene’s Tacky Glue and rolled down with a craft brayer to firmly adhere it to the balsa foundation. Once dry, the white edges of the paper were dark- ened with a soft pencil and the whole assembly was given a coat of sprayed
