The first thing I noticed about this model was not the model at all. It was the packaging. Eastern Seaboard Mod- els has done something with the pack- aging that I found to be highly thoughtful and most useful. On the rear of the package is a small box con- taining information on the service date and a photo. This tells the modeler when the boxcar was placed into ser- vice and when the car photo was taken for the package. I can’t tell you how many times I have looked at a model and not purchased it because I was un- sure if it was correct for my era or not. The modeler can be 100 percent cer- tain when purchasing these models that the car is correct for their model- ing era. I love this and commend East- ern Seaboard Models for putting this much thought into the packaging. My love of the product does not end with the packaging. Opening up the jewel case reveals a car that is simply gorgeous. Everything I want in a freight car model is represented here. What struck me first was the etched parts. The roofwalks, end platforms, and brake wheel platforms are all made of etched metal and extremely fine looking. They are also neatly and well applied. They are supported by cast plastic braces and are firmly at- tached. The roof walk is attached and

is flat from end to end. I can’t tell you how annoying it is for me to see a mod- el with an etched roofwalk that looks like a lasagna noodle. There is also a corner grab iron attached to the top of the boxcar through the etched brass roofwalk. This is nicely done. I origi- nally thought that the side ladders as well as the car stirrups were etched parts. That is what I had expected. Nope! These details are part of the body and done in injection molded plastic. I was astonished to find that these parts were molded into the body and looked so fine and delicate that I had assumed they were separate, a very nice execution of these parts. I was also very impressed by the ap- plication of paint on the models. The lettering that is placed over the exteri- or bracing is cleanly applied with paint laying on all three faces of the exterior rib. I have no idea how this is done, but it is well done. The printing is crisp and even the smallest lettering is legi- ble. I love the ACI plate on PRR car No. 114260 (item No. 222104). The multiple color barcode is cleanly print- ed and the colors are vibrant, popping out on the boxcar. The finish of the model is just right as well, not too glossy and not too flat. I don’t see any reason to do anything further to the appearance of the car other than
