as are m.u. hoses, coupler cut lever and moveable diaphragms at the rear. A five chime horn is mounted above the engineer on top of the unit.
The B-unit is adorned with the red/yellow/black bands along the bot- tom. All of the upper and lower side panels are plated, with silver paint ap- plied to the top, ends and everything below the sides. The unit number, the WATER fill point indication and F (indi- cating the front of the B-unit) are clearly printed in the red portion of the War Bonnet band. The Santa Fe name is located adjacent to the rear side doors (rear being the end containing the steam heat equipment). The Santa Fe Chieftain logo is centered on each side, with the headdress flowing to the rear of the unit. Separate lighting units, to be ap- plied by the modeler, are provided for the rear of the A-unit and both ends of the B-unit. Santa Fe required a red light to be displayed on locomotives which were idling and awaiting a call to service. Our sample contained the housing equipped with a clear lens. I applied a drop of transparent red acrylic paint to round out the detail. Also included for modeler application
are air whistles for the rear of each unit. These were used to provide warn- ing signals when the locomotive was being moved in reverse.
Both units are powered, and sup- plied with SoundTraxx sound secoders. These are dual mode decoders, operat- ing on either d.c. (analog) or DCC (digi- tal) systems. As with other dual mode decoders, the operation differs between d.c. and DCC. In the d.c. mode, the decoder re- quires the operator to increase the throttle to about 5 volts to initialize the decoder and sound system, after which an additional increase in the throttle setting will initiate movement of the locomotive. When starting in the for- ward direction, the horn will sound twice; in the reverse direction it is acti- vated twice. We tested our sample on a large d.c.-controlled home layout, putting it through its paces. We initial- ly ran the engines without the passen- ger cars to verify that the locomotives would not have a speed surge on start- up when lightly loaded, and then with a nine car consist to assure that the A-B lash-up was capable of handling a long passenger train.
