An easy way to add weight to any model. TEMPLOW melts in hot water (158º to 190ºF). Won’t unsolder brass

emitted an audible clicking sound. The sound initialized as the voltage reached the prescribed level. A gradual increase in the output voltage increase beyond the initialization point resulted in a smooth, slow startup. The train was operated at a variety of speeds with smooth operation across the full range of the power supply. At full throttle the train reached what I con- sider a layout appropriate speed for a passenger train.

In the DCC mode the operation was equally smooth and flawless. DCC op- eration opens up additional sound, lighting and control features through the use of the controller function but- tons and the ability to adjust the CV’s. The operator should note that some of the features of the function buttons may vary from other manufacturers’ decoders. While in the process of evaluating the operation of the locomotives, we had the opportunity to run the train through a variety of track configurations and con- ditions. The engines and cars operated well through turnouts, crossings, crossovers, double crossovers and a dou- ble slip switch.

The cartons for the passenger cars are marked with a minimum operating track radius of 24 inches, and the cars operated well on this radius. We did encounter a tendency for one truck of the transition car to derail when pass- ing through a 24 inch curved turnout. This was caused by the stirrup steps on one end interfering with the truck sideframes. Careful adjustment of the stirrup steps seemed to alleviate the problem.

The new Walthers El Capitan is a

nicely detailed, smoothly operating passenger train that should meet the approval of the Santa Fe modeler as well as those who are interested in the remarkable trains of the streamlined era. Whether running alone or in com- bination with the First Class cars of the Super Chief, the El Capitan should be a welcome addition to you passen- ger operation.

The F7 A- and B-units separately sell for $169.98 in d.c., and $259.98 for DCC and sound. The A-B sets for d.c. operation are $329.98, and the DCC sound sets are $479.98. The prices of the El Capitan consist are as follows: the 85-foot, Budd hi-level, 68 seat, step-down coach is $79.98; the 63-foot Budd RPO is $69.98; the 73-foot bag- gage car is $69.98; the 85-foot, Budd step-down, hi-level coach with tail sign is $79.98; the Budd 85-foot, hi-level diner is $79.98; the Budd 85-foot, Hi- level “Sky lounge” is $79.98; and the Budd 85-foot, hi-level, 72-seat coach is $79.98.—KEN BREHER

X58 boxcar: N scale

Eastern Seaboard Models has once again introduced a much needed car that fills a void in the N scale modeling world. The Pennsylvania 50-foot class X58 boxcar is one of those cars that was very distinctive looking but has not been well represented in model form. The X58 exterior-post boxcar marked the beginning of what modern freight railroading would look like for years to come. The cushioned under- frame ensured that the freight carried
