maybe some light weathering. The cars ride on two different under- frames: Keystone and Hydra-Cush- ioned. Each underframe is used for the correct prototype. The parts of the cushioning system and brake rigging are fantastic looking. They are accu- rately reproduced and well represent- ed on the model. Parts of the airbrake system hang down slightly and show up nicely when viewed at eye level. As a result of the cushioning system, the couplers are extended outward from the end of the car. Ridiculous coupling distances were always a part of model railroading in the past. These cars ap- pear to be miles apart when coupled to- gether. In the case of this model, it is not a mistake or an operational com- promise. It is actually the correct dis- tance for this type of car. Some people in a few online modeling forums ques- tioned this coupling distance. There is nothing to question. Eastern Seaboard Models did it correctly.

The cars ride on BLMA’s ASF 70-ton ride control trucks with low profile wheels. These trucks are absolutely stunning and are correct for this mod- el. It seems as if I often upgrade the trucks and couplers on freight car mod- els. These cars come with excellent ones right out of the box. The cars are also equipped with Micro-Trains No. 1015 reverse draft angle, body-mount- ed, short-shank couplers. Again, the model comes equipped with appropri- ate parts; there is no need for upgrad- ing. (Spend your time and money on trees or something like that for your model railroad). The car has good looks and performs just as well. The BLMA trucks are free rolling with minimal resistance be- cause of the machined metal wheelsets. The car also sits at a proto- typical ride height. I love seeing the trucks tucked up into the underframe. That makes this car look massive. The couplers also perform well since they are Micro-Trains couplers. The car is best run on layouts with curves no tighter than 10″ radius but on my test

track I was able to run the car on tighter curves. I would never want to do that on a layout but it could be done. Eastern Seaboard Models has got something good here. This is one of those cars that everyone could use on their layout. The cars lasted for a long time and wore many different paint schemes throughout the years. I have not gotten tired of looking at the mod- els and am eagerly awaiting future re- leases of the more modern-looking X58’s, the Penn Central version espe- cially. This model has detail that is just so fine. We are living in good times when it comes to N scale modeling. Most of us remember its early days, and we stuck with it in spite of the compromises; cars like this are one of our rewards. Eastern Seaboard Models, through- out their 25 year history, has always introduced fine models and their X58 boxcar is a welcome addition to the line. The Eastern Seaboard Models Pennsylvania Class X58 boxcar sells for $32.95 and is currently available. Visit www.esmc.com for more informa- tion.—SCOTT LUPIA

New Haven Orleans freight house: HO scale

Mfd. by Alpine Division Scale Mod- els, LLC, P.O. Box 6, Artesia, CA 90702; www.alpinemodels.com. Until the mid-point of the 20th cen- tury, the railroad freight house was a key structure in even the smallest rail serviced community. The freight house functioned as a consolidation point for outbound shipments in addition to handling the less than carload ship- ments arriving inbound for the various businesses and residents of the area not large enough to be rail served di- rectly. As l.c.l. business on the rail- roads declined, to be replaced by over- the-road trucks, the local freight house was either sold off to a local business, converted to a railroad warehouse for maintenance-of-way materials or, in many cases, simply demolished to re- move the tax burden.
