LIONEL O-27 FA
models were made in HO and O by Ri- varossi, the HO seen here. In all, Fair- banks-Morse retained Loewy between 1944 and mid-1950’s, involving him in styling nine diesels. Raymond Patten, less familiar, took a
fresh look at creating a road diesel which didn’t attempt to copy GM. Otto Kuhler’s DL 109 was a try at being dif- ferent, but Patten created a new form suitable for freight and passenger units alike: the popular GE-Alco blunt nosed FA and PA. As director of GE’s Appear- ance Design Division, he wanted a dis- tinct, powerful design that would help railroads attract passengers and ship- pers alike. The headlight in the nose grille served as product brand identifi- cation and focal point. In his 1945 patent drawing, it was lower as seen on those made for GM&O, but later raised as we now know it. His GE work was important and is believed to have con-

tributed to semi-streamlined 1937 Ford Motor Company diesel switchers with their automotive style grilles. The FA and PA saw more tinplate models than scale. Lionel and Kusan’s K-series had many FA liveries. Kusan produced it as a two or three-rail oper- ating model, controlled for either op- tion by a switch on the unit. American Flyer made a handsome ³/₁₆″ S gauge PA in prototype and fantasy liveries. Early closed pilot models appeared best, while later versions had a wide pilot opening for coupler swing. In terms of looks, Lionel and American Flyer’s first models come off best. Ku- san’s FA, looking much like Lionel’s, re- mained physically unchanged except for different motors to improve per- formance. The PA was modeled circa 1950 in O scale brass by Central Loco- motive Works and in HO by Hobby- town and Lindsay.
