Understanding that not all innovators have formal academic training to engineer an innovation or to manage business enterprises that flow from innovation is an insight that the Entrepreneurial University could ill afford to miss.
Conclusions and further research The Entrepreneurial University that is not able to support innovators as part of its third income stream could soon become competitively irrelevant. More research is needed to evaluate which South African university is best suited to close the Innovation Gap through it linkage with industry and enterprise. The days that research output is restricted to the clinical halls of Academia are gone forever.
If South Africa wants to advance on the ladder of the Global Innovation Index, it can no longer wait for Government or parastatals to intervene. The knowledge maker and the product maker must reach hands and unite.
