Step 3 – Financial Backing

One of the main challenges faced by the innovation function is budget and sustaining a financial commitment towards innovation. If an organisation is able to align its innovation function to the strategy of the organisation, then budgeting for such a function becomes part of the organisational operational deliverables.

• To sustain financial support, the innovation function has to illustrate its contribution to achieving business objectives; • In addition, the function should search for alternate funding mechanisms, which could be legislatively driven and could include tax incentives, donor communities, sponsorships and even the Enterprise Development Pillar on the BBBEE reporting framework; • Open Innovation could provide an additional revenue stream, should the organisation choose to invest in ideas and commercialise innovation attempts from the broader innovation community.

Step 4 – Champions and Ambassadors They are named differently in many organisations, also called catalysts, ideators, change agents, etcetera. They become your internal innovation advocates and agents for change. Ideally, champions should be armed with the tools of innovation, experience in using them and skills for facilitating others. Organisations that have an embedded culture of innovation have play rooms or chill zones where creativity is promoted. In these organisations it becomes a way of life ingrained in their business mentality.

• To successfully launch and create a sustained focus on innovation requires commitment at all levels; • It is important to attract the right type of individual to fulfil this role; • Select champions based on the enthusiasm, commitment and willingness to challenge the status quo;
