NO RULE SHOULD EVER BE CAST IN STONE, AS THE EVER EVOLVING NATURE OF OUR SOCIO-ECONOMIC ENVIRONMENT GUARANTEES THAT AT SOME POINT VIRTUALLY EVERY RULE WILL SOMEDAY REACH ITS SELL-BY DATE AND BEGIN WORKING AGAINST THE SYSTEM

focused on pressing the innovation accelerator to the floor that they forget to ease off on the brakes of inefficiency. This is when I normally get the call, because there is plenty of noise and wheel spinning without the expected acceleration in performance and profits. At this point, the company needs to take a step back and eliminate inherent conditions that are counterproductive and retarding its performance.

Solving this problem can be quite tricky, because it is not always obvious what the origin or root cause of the problem is. In fact, quite often the problem sits in a blind spot or somewhere leaders least expected it to be, which often leads to further waste because they end up addressing the wrong problem or trying to fix something that was not broken to begin with.

Recently a client contacted me to help him increase the output of his engineering firm, which was performing below capacity. He was convinced the wrong people were being recruited because of poor screening procedures. As it turns out, the origin of the problem pointed to his senior engineers who were not delegating tasks effectively to the junior engineers, leaving them idle despite having the required qualifications and skills and being eager to prove themselves.

Finding the right tools for the job Just as business leaders rely on innovation to devise novel and original solutions that will improve performance and profits, they need processes and tools to identify and address existing conditions that are eroding or

limiting performance and profits. For

this, deconstructive innovation becomes an invaluable tool in any leader’s arsenal.

Deconstructive innovation is a means of unlocking performance and profits by re- examining and redefining the rules that govern the system.
