What is Leadership Innovation? Leadership Innovation is made up of two words:


lead·er·ship/ˈlēdərˌSHip/ - The action of leading a group of people or an organisation


- The state or position of being a leader and


in·no·va·tion/ˌinəˈvāSHən/ - The action or process of innovating


- A newmethod, idea, product, etcetera: ‘technological innovations’

INTO WHERE WE ARE GOING, WITH THE WISDOM AND WILL TO ACT ON


nnovation Leadership consists of two main ideas, each weighted more on one of these two words. The first has to do with giving direction and leading or managing people in an innovative way. This is called Innovative Leadership. The second has to do with creating an environment where innovative thinking abounds, with the goal of breaching into new areas as a group or organisation, and this is called Leadership for Innovation Innovative Leadership.


The emphasis for Innovative Leadership


lies more on leadership than innovation. There have been numerous books, articles and talks on leadership styles and skills. Examples of the most common leadership styles are the following: • Autocratic or authoritarian style, where the leader is known as a dictator and all decision- making comes from that single person. • Participative or democratic style, where decision-making is left to a group of people, or where a leader involves a group of people in a consultative way to partake in the decision- making process.

• Laissez-faire or free rein style is where the leader does not lead, but leaves the group to make their own decisions and set their own processes and standards. • Narcissistic leadership is where a leader leads out of a desire for power, often with his or her own agenda. • Toxic leadership is where the leader abuses their power and leaves a group in a worst state than before.


It can be argued that an Innovative


Leadership style can follow any of the above styles when the situation requires, except possibly the Narcissistic Leadership style. Toxic leadership is also an option for the innovative leader as it has been stated that
