135. APPROVED – Pairs Committee and Competitions Committee Amend rules 5061, 5062 and 5080 (page 228, Rulebook) and rule 5230 (pages 242-243, Rulebook) to add an intermediate pairs short program to qualifying competitions:
5060 Composition of Pair Events 5061 Senior, junior, and novice and intermediate pair events will consist of a short program and a free skate, which will be skated and judged as provided in rules 5200, 5210, and 5220 and 5230 respectively. If a qualifying round is necessary at qualifying competitions, only the free skate shall will be skated in the qualifying round. The champi- onship round shall will consist of a short program and a free skate. The short program must precede the free skate except in qualifying rounds.
5062
Intermediate and jJuvenile pair events shall will consist of free skate only. The events shall will be skated and judged in accordance with rules 5030 and 5040 respectively.
5080 Short Program Description A. The short program for senior, junior and novice pairs shall will consist of seven technical elements with connecting steps.
B. The short program for intermediate pairs will consist of six tech- nical elements with connecting steps.
BC.The sequence of the elements is optional.
CD.The short program is skated to music of the skaters’ choice for the specified period of time.
5230 Intermediate Pairs
INTERMEDIATE PAIRS SHORT PROGRAM 2:30 maximum time
Must contain the following elements in any order LIFT
One lift selected from Groups 1-4, type optional • Variations of the lady’s position, no-handed and one- handed lifts, combination lifts, lifts that include a carry feature, carry lifts and lifts that turn in both directions are not permitted; however, if a pair executes a platter lift, the release of the lady’s hands after the lift extension has been achieved is not a violation of this rule.
• Minimum of two revolutions by the lady • Minimum of one and maximum of 3 1/2 revolutions by the man
TWIST LIFT
One twist lift (single or double) • Take off must be a flip or a Lutz
SOLO JUMP One solo jump (single or double) PAIR SPIN
One pair spin • No change of foot • Optional change of position • Minimum of five revolutions total • The rotation must be continuous, and no stop is permitted • Must not be commenced with a jump
DEATH SPIRAL/ PIVOT FIGURE
One death spiral or pivot figure • Regular hand-to-hand hold required • In the final position while the lady is performing the actual death spiral or pivot figure, both the man and the lady must execute a minimum of one-half revolution with the knees of the man clearly bent and in full pivot position
STEP SEQUENCE
One choreographic step sequence (straight line, circular or serpentine) • Must fully utilize the ice surface
REMARKS • Unless otherwise stated, all elements must meet the general criteria and basic requirements in order to be counted (see rule section 5100).
• Connecting steps are permitted and must be marked. They are not additional elements.

5230 Intermediate Pairs
INTERMEDIATE PAIRS WELL-BALANCED FREE SKATE 3:00 +/- 10 seconds
Must contain the following elements in any order LIFTS
Maximum of two • Lifts can be selected from Groups 1-4 and must be different • Lifts are to be selected from Group 1 lifts and the Group 2 waist loop lift. In the alternative, the skaters may select to perform one of their two lifts from among the following additional choices: a forward press lift, a two-handed star or a platter lift.
• Variations of the lady’s position, no-handed and one-handed lifts, combination lifts, lifts that include a carry feature, carry lifts and lifts that turn in both directions are not permitted. However, if a pair executes a platter lift, the release of the lady’s hands after the lift extension has been achieved is not a violation of this rule.

• Spirals must be on edges with the free leg (knee/foot) higher than hip
• Minimum of two spirals by both partners for three seconds each or one spiral by both partners for six seconds each

5220 Novice Pairs

One lift selected from Groups 1-5, type optional a designated Group (same as Group prescribed by the ISU for the senior pairs short program lifts, except that in the years where the ISU requires senior teams to do a lasso lift take-off (Group 5), U.S. novice pairs will be allowed to do any Group 4 or Group 5 lift.)(Requirement will be any hand- to-hand lift take-off (Group 4) for 2012-13.) • One-handed variations and changes of hold or of the lady’s position during the lift are permitted
• Minimum of two revolutions by the lady • Minimum of one and maximum of 3½ revolutions by the man
• The lift may not include a carry feature or be a carry lift
THROW JUMP
One throw jump (single, or double or triple) • Any single or double throw jump is permitted Prescribed take off (same as prescribed throw jump for junior each season) (Requirement will be single, double or triple Salchow for 2012-13.)
