Hangzhou adds eats Virgin upgrades Upper BA trials new services onboard
SSP has secured a seven-year deal worth over £35 million to operate five units at Hangzhou Xiaoshan International Airport when its new third terminal opens in November. The new offering will combine a mix of Chinese and South East Asian brands and Western cuisine, specifically selected following an extensive survey of passenger needs at the airport. The results showed a high demand for concepts based on Chinese foods, but also a desire for variety, quick service as well as table service and value for money. The offering will include Chinese brand Goubuli, renowned for its baozi (Chinese filled steamed buns), and Japanese outlet Ajisen Ramen, which tops the list of Chinese passengers’ favourite for quick casual cuisine. SSP’s own brand, Spices, will also offer South
East Asian dishes, and Feng Yuan will serve dishes based on the foods of Korea. Research showed there was also demand for
local Hangzhou snacks, and SSP will create a bespoke counter service restaurant offering this menu. A French-style brasserie, Le Grand Comptoir, will complete the selection. The outlets will be located in two separate
areas of the terminal and will total 1,000 square metres.

Virgin Atlantic has unveiled a £100 million investment in its Upper Class Cabin complete with an innovative online ‘showroom’. PlaneView technology allows passengers
to take a fully-immersive virtual tour of the cabin and view its features in the most social showroom on the
web.It enables clients to experience the key features of the redesigned cabin online before they step foot on the real world aircraft. It links to 40 interactive YouTube videos showcasing details of the newly designed cabin. The new looks include a new bar – the longest in the sky – which stretches 2.5 metres and has space to accommodate eight people; bespoke Swarovski crystal curtains adorned with over 1,000 crystals, and new cabin mood lighting to create eight separate atmospheres during the flight. The Upper Class cabin, which has taken
four and a half years to build, will also feature the new Upper Class Suite, Virgin Atlantic’s most sophisticated and comfortable bed to date – incorporating a new comfort system, an innovative new entertainment hub as well as a host of new design elements to maximise space and comfort in-flight. Upper Class passengers also now have the chance to cool their in-flight drinks with ‘Little Richard’ ice cubes. The bespoke ice cubes have been crafted in the image of Virgin Atlantic’s president Sir Richard Branson.

British Airways is trialling two unique new initiatives designed to take service in the skies to new heights. The ‘onboard travel advisor’ and ‘golden ticket’ trials sees over 2,000 iPads rolled out to senior cabin crew, all crammed with top travel apps, designed to help customers. Announcements are being made on selected longhaul flights to offer the services of an ‘onboard travel advisor’ and the designated crew member is able to provide travel information on request. From hotels to restaurants, theatre shows
to shopping hours, British Airways cabin crew will be able to provide information and top tips on a range of destinations. Onboard travel advisors are currently offering information on nine routes including: New York, Johannesburg, Mumbai and Sao Paulo. British Airways is also giving its most frequent travellers the chance to commend individual crewmembers through ‘golden tickets’ that can be handed over inflight. During the trial, British Airways has given 3,000 of its top UK customers two golden tickets to recognise cabin crew at any time. British Airways managers will then be able to thank individuals personally for their contribution.
