was far enough away to require some hold over (like holding on top of a dog’s back), I shot high. Upon returning home, I did some

load development with the Nosler 40-grain Ballistic Tip bullet, and found it pretty tough to match the Nosler factory load’s 3,700 fps velocity. More experimentation is required. For now, I think I’ll do the smart thing and just order another case of the Nosler Custom Varmint ammunition for use exclu- sively in the Spartan Walkabout rifle. This combination of rifle and ammo is just that good! Two More 223s

After using both the Colt AR 6720

Coyote and Spartan Rifle’s Walkabout almost daily for a month and a half, I have to say I’m sold on both rifles … and they have now become permanent additions to my accumulation of 223 varmint rifles. Having given the Colt a camo

paint job, I guess this AR is probably mine whether I want it or not. The good news is, I really liked using this semi- auto AR platform rifle in the varmint fields, especially on those days with quickly changing, fickle winds. The Colt 6720 Coyote functioned 100 percent of the time (with good ammo), was as ac- curate as it needed to be, and has sealed its place in my traveling varmint bat- tery. It will be going west in the future and will contribute greatly to my ever- growing pile of empty 223 cartridge cases. I think I’ll hunt up a scope mount that’s a bit lower than the B-Square unit that came with the rifle so I can get the Leupold 4.5-14’s axis closer to the bore line. But other than that, the rifle is re- ally “good to go” for varminting right out of the box. Most important, I’m going to be sure that any ammunition intended to be used in the Colt is of the proper overall length so I don’t have to spend my evenings in camp on future trips sorting the next day’s ammo. If you have never used an AR platform rifle for varmint hunting, and have an interest in doing so, I suggest you take a look at Colt’s offerings. Making empties has never been so much fun! Finally, I’m so pleased with the

223 Walkabout from Spartan Precision Rifles that I can’t say enough about it. Maybe I’ve overdone it already. Marc Soulie took a pile of parts and turned them into a compact and effective

projectile delivery system. The Bergara barrel has proven to be accurate beyond all expectations and the Manners stock has provided a solid chassis for the fully bedded metal work. This rifle will, for now, serve as my everyday rifle here in the mountains of West Virginia. I have the ultimate confidence in the Walk- about’s ability to deliver accurate shots within the limits of the 223 cartridge, whenever called upon to do so. Stoutly constructed with great care and preci- sion by an up and coming riflesmith, the Walkabout has considerably raised the performance bar by which I will judge all future varmint and hunting rifles. Although mine is the first and it didn’t “make weight,” I’m sure Marc Soulie would be delighted to build other Walkabouts.
