example of this is the case that we are talking about now – the development and marketing of the 6.5 Creedmoor cartridge. CREEDMOOR MEETS PRAIRIE DOGS For some time my interest in the

6.5 Creedmoor had been piqued as I listened to my gunsmith and other shooters rave about the cartridge, but

my first actual hands-on experience came a while back when I joined up with some of the Savage and Hornady staff for a few days of shooting prairie dogs in Wyoming. At the time we were testing several of Savage’s rifl es, one of which was chambered in the Creed- moor. Anyone who has ever shot on the open plains of Wyoming knows well

that there are virtually no days that the wind doesn’t blow, or as some of the lo- cals put it: “If it isn’t blowing, it sucks.” Trying to hold a rifl e steady when the wind is rocking you side to side, and at the same time attempting to accurately adjust for wind drift, turns out some- times to be more of a trial and error proposition than one of a planned cal- culation. Nevertheless, I found myself frequently celebrating long-range kills on dogs out beyond 300 yards with the Savage-built 6.5 Creedmoor. But those shots didn’t sound so impressive when I heard Hornady’s Neil Davies registered a kill at 785 yards. Right then and there I fi gured that I needed to look a little deeper into this new 6.5mm creature. So, upon returning home to Montana from the trip, I gave in to the urge and made arrangements with Savage to send me a rifl e for further testing … this time under the less hostile conditions of my rifl e range. ing in Wyoming I found myself holding a Savage Model 12 LRP chambered in 6.5 Creedmoor. This particular rifl e was a right-bolt, right-port design and came in a matte blue/black fi nish. The black colored H-S Precision varmint/target styled composite stock had a textured, non-slip fi nish and was equipped with a recoil pad and sling swivel studs. The removable magazine held four rounds, with the possibility of feeding a fi fth directly into the chamber. The heavy target-style 26-inch barrel was fl uted and target crowned, with the muzzle measuring slightly over an inch in diam- eter. With a weight of about 11 pounds without the scope, this clearly was not a walk-about style rifl e, but it appeared perfect for stationary varmint shooting. And of course the rifl e was equipped with Savage's signature AccuTrigger™. I have introduced many shooters in recent years to the AccuTrigger. Many of those shooters had never tried an AccuTrigger before and initially were critical. But after only a couple of shots their attitude changed dramatically and eventually these shooters found they liked the design. I certainly can understand their hesitation and skep- ticism because I too shared that same opinion in the beginning. I simply didn’t like the idea of having to compress the
