inch barrel. Even handier is compact transport, because with the buttstock removed, I can fit this rifle in a hard case that is only 37 inches long. And reinstalling the buttstock is faster than removing it. The final interesting aspect of this

chassis system is that it’s made in Can- ada. But getting one is not a problem for Americans because Brownells handles this item. And who doesn’t love to do business with Brownells? The rest of the world should contact the manufacturer, who tells me they’ve already shipped all over the globe. That sums up the most significant

features of the TAC21 system, but still leaves the question of how it performs in the field. The company’s target mar- ket includes competitive and tactical shooters, and although I used to do both, like most readers, I’m a varmint hunter now. And this is a varmint hunting magazine anyway, so I tested it from that perspective. With a 204 Ruger barreled ac-

tion installed, I’ve shot gophers (that’s a 2-inch vital zone) out to 300 yards. Also, a number of magpies presented

themselves as targets of opportunity out to 150 yards, as have coyotes out to 212 yards. While that is not stretching the rifle’s capabilities in terms of extended ranges, I have stretched its role. Besides using it as a “stationary” rifle, I’ve also used it as a “calling” gun, having taken a bunch of coyotes with it to date. On one stand it took a triple and it’s also accounted for two doubles, so obvi- ously it doesn’t give up too much in the handling department. And while it’s too heavy for me to enjoy carrying very far, it’s OK for short hikes. However, like any weighty rifle, once the crosshair finds fur it sure locks into place. It’s fabulous for setting up overlooking a ground squirrel colony and doing ro- dent control. Within the confines of the system’s

role in creating a precision rifle, I found the TAC21 works superbly. It is stable, ergonomic (except for the safety), adds a detachable magazine, provides straight line recoil handling, a familiar AR “feel,” a 20 m.o.a. rail, compact storage and transport, and multiple rail options. Of course, it’s no more accurate than the barreled action which lives inside that

magical housing. Give it a good barrel and it will deliver the goods to all kinds of varmints.
