the horizontal crosshair. Today there are all kinds of complicated reticles that
allow us to compensate for bullet drop and windage, but the fi rst among them was the mil-dot reticle, fi rst offered as a custom reticle in Leupold scopes by Precision Reticles. I have several of these installed in Leupold 6.5-20x scopes. The mil- dot reticle subtends as a series of oval dots on the horizontal as well as vertical crosshair. The distance from the crosshair to the start of the dot is ¾ mil. The mil dot itself subtends ¼ mil, so the crosshair to the outside of the fi rst dot subtends one mil. By the way, mil is short for milliradian. The simplest way to conceptualize a mil is to think of it as one ¹/1,000
of the

the size of the animal at which we are shooting. And we can measure the subtension from the point of the thick reticle to the center of the crosshair. For example, most Leupold scopes subtend 2.5 MOA from each Duplex post to the center crosswire at their highest power. If wind drift is 2.5 MOA, we can use this as our aiming point. But it is nowhere near as precise as a reticle that offers different aiming points along
distance to the target. For example, a mil at 100 yards is ¹⁰⁰/1,000 yards, or 0.1 yard. A yard is 36 inches, so ¹⁄₁₀ of a yard is 3.6 inches. A mil at 1,000 yards is 36 inches. Don’t confuse a mil with MOA, or minute of an angle. A minute of an angle is the distance subtended by ⅙ ₀ of 1 degree. A circle with a radius of 100 yards has a circumference of 22,619.47 inches (the formula for a circle’s circumference is 2πr). If we divide this by 360 degrees, we fi nd that one degree subtends 62.83185 inches. Since there are 60 minutes in a degree, if we divide this by 60, we arrive at a 1.047 inches in a minute of an angle. Most shooters, including me, think of one MOA as an inch at 100 yards, or 10 inches at 1,000. The error is negligible, but it does add up if our ballistics program isn’t aligned with our scope adjustments. For example, if our ballistics program calls for 12 MOA but our scope moves the bullet impact by ¼ inch per click, we are going to be off a total of 0.047 multiplied by 48, or 2.25 inches.
