have a complete rifleman’s setup at a very fair market price. I first met up with the new Norma line of varmint class
bullets several years ago during an industry hunt near my home in western South Dakota. I was hunting with Coo- per rifles and Norma Ammunition just off the state line in Wyoming for spring prairie dogs. Norma was introducing a completely new line of 204 Ruger ammo to a number of outdoor writers. After additional testing and covering the subject in
the written word, I put the project aside. That was until I received a call from a local gun writer and staff person with Black Hills Shooters Supply in Rapid City, South Dakota. Richard Fosland had been responsible for that first introduc- tory hunt with Norma products in Wyoming. He wanted to know if I was interested in taking a look at some additional Norma products that fit right in with varmint hunters. He did not have to ask twice, and within a few days I was being supplied with two new Norma cartridges that included a 5.56mm (223 Rem.) load and, a favorite of mine, a fast mover in 22-250 Remington. You don’t have to study rocket science to know that
Norma has long been known for their high class product line, which consists of very top grade brass, bullets, and propellants. In two words, this outfit is known as a “class act.” When the ammo got to me I was turning much of my attention to our approaching deer and antelope season, being almost one and the same on a local western South Dakota level. Along with the big game season fast approaching, there are day-to-day chances at an assortment of early fall varmint
critters. When coyotes start to fur up, and prairie dogs work overtime to cut as much feed for the winter as possible, it all means more time on targets. In this case, my choice in rifles was the newer and nicely designed Model 10 XP Savage Predator, chambered in the 22-250 Remington cartridge. This rifle has an oversized bolt handle for coyote hunters who are wearing mitts or gloves in cold weather, a medium contour barrel that is a balance between a heavy varmint and pencil thin configuration, and a synthetic material stock that has been dressed in a Mossy Oak Brush camo pattern for field concealment. My choice of scope for the Savage Predator was a Ca-
bela’s Pine Ridge ranging scope. This scope will adjust from 6-18x, and has a top turret range calculating system based on a 50-grain 22-250 bullet. The 55-grain Norma is a bit on the heavy side for the pre-set range adjustments but was still reasonably accurate if I fudged a click or two when advanc- ing the elevation adjustments for bullet drop downrange. When mounted in some heavy tactical rings, the scope was rock solid. After an initial zero, I found the system to be just about foolproof out to 400 yards or more. With my rifle zeroed using a variety of other varmint
and light game loads in 22-250, I simply loaded the new Norma fodder in the Predator’s blind magazine and headed out into the field in search of a decent whitetail buck. I was try- ing to fill an open prairie deer tag. I got my first opportunity to test the Oryx bullet on a nice buck that came walking out of a low drainage as I was moving along a fence line about 175 yards away. The shot was a bit long for the light bullet, at
